Coaching kids is rewarding.  They gain confidence and a love for the game of hockey through positive feedback from parents, coaches, and other players.  Skill levels develop at different time and ages, but effort and having fun can always be achieved. Providing positive feedback for effort and commitment is imperative to building a fun environment for the players.  I think it’s important that a coach takes more than a casual interest in the players.  Each player should know that their coach likes him/her as a person. I believe in trying to make practices as fun and entertaining as possible, while providing the practice and instruction needed to improve and develop. I’ve found that players expect and respond to well-structured and organized practices.  Attention span is often limited with this age group, so I will strive to keep them moving and active.

I have 5 main objectives which I believe are important, (each one being as important as the next).

  1. Help your child develop awareness for the game.
  2. Have fun and develop a love for the game.
  3. Learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.
  4. Give positive reinforcement based on effort and NOT results.
